BYE WEEK NOTES

 Capital of Texas Nebraskans

Yes, this is an off week for the Huskers. They have an extra week to prepare for the Big 10 portion of their schedule. The next game is October 5 against Illinois with an 11 AM kickoff. Third Base will open at 10:30 a.m. for that game.

The 3 and 1 Huskers had a good showing last week, resting the injured Taylor Martinez. Thanks to everyone who came out for the last watch party. Nice crowd both North and South.

Thanks also to all the supporters who showed up on Sunday for the Huskers vs Longhorns women's volleyball game. The Huskers lost, but what a great match. This went to 5 sets losing in the fifth set by 3 points. The young Husker team played a great game in a very noisy, sold out Texas environment. AND I am happy to say the Nebraska supporters provided a lot of the noise. This group of Huskers will only get better. Great turnout for a very exciting event. My compliments to the Longhorns on the win and I was impressed by the Texas team providing autographs and pictures for their fans for about 20 minutes following the game.

There’s something about Nebraskans.

....My 'Braskies (they love/hate it when I call them that) have power. Raw, brut power. They will win every sack-of-grain toss, every arm wrestle, every shot put. They can open every pickle jar with their bare hands. Bear hands. Bare bear hands........

The Huskers looked a lot better last Saturday. The opponent gets tougher this weekend. UCLA is ranked 16th and are coming off a bye week. This will be a serious test for the Huskers.

With the game at 11 am this week, we should get a lot more space at Third Base. Last Saturday's turnout at Third Base Northwest was once again over 100 and thanks to everyone down at Southpark Meadows for increasing the attendance there to over 20. Once again, thanks to everyone for your patience with the crowded conditions the past 2 weeks. The management and staff have continued to work to make your Watch Party experience better. I also appreciate the great enthusiasm of our loyal Husker group.

Date:                      Saturday, September 7, 2013

Hi  Capital of Texas Nebraskans,

We didn't expect the first game to end as it did, but at least it was a win. The good news, practices will not be filled with overconfidence this week. The offense looked good, but needed more push at the end.

The game is at 5 pm this week. We have been assured we will have more room. Thanks to everyone for your patience with the situation last week. Yes, it was too crowded. The positive in this is that we showed we can bring the numbers. I enjoyed the great visibility on the game with TVs everywhere and not the poor screens we have seen in the past. AND the service was great. Third Base Management and Staff really worked to make the best of the conditions.

We are beginning to ramp up our support at the SouthPark Meadows Third Base location. This is a good option for those with convenient access to this part of the area. We had a beginning turnout down south last Saturday and hope to build on this option.

A reminder about the upcoming NU vs Texas Volleyball Game on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1 pm. This is held at Gregory Gym, 2101 Speedway, on the UT Campus. Always a great entertainment value and at probably the best time of the week to get downtown. Texas is ranked #1 in the country with virtually all starters returning. NU always has a great team. Your chance to cheer the Huskers right here in Austin. Tickets are available online at $8 each ($4 for groups of 10 or more). There is an added handling charge also. With the expectations of Texas Fans this year, it is likely a good idea to buy your tickets early. This week's game vs Penn State is already sold out. Search "Texas Volleyball Tickets" and locate the event for the online buy option. If 10 are purchased, the handling charge is just $1 for at home printing.

We are looking for more help as we expand our activities. This is a great group to get more involved with. You already know how Nebraska Fans are respected nationally. This is a volunteer group and everyone has conflicts with their normal life requirements, so we are looking for those that can fill in. Depending on your availability, you also have the opportunity of joining our Core Committee. We operate as voting committee where no one person makes the final decision. Let us know how you would like to assist. For volunteers, the Southpark Meadows location is a great ground floor opportunity. Your chance to really make a difference. I have been helping out with Texas Alumni groups since the 70s and never regretted any effort I contributed. A great way to get to know more of your fellow Texas Huskers.

We are soon to receive new merchandise that will likely be available for this next game. Let us know what you would like and we will see what we can do to meet your needs.

More details will soon be available about the MyPlates.com promotions, your chance to obtain the coveted "HUSKER" Texas plate, and upcoming special raffles of $55 MyPlates coupons.

We saw a lot of new Husker faces at the last Watch Party. Please make them feel welcome. Many are looking for new friends in the area as they recently moved to our fine city. We welcome the opportunity to assist them in their transition. We are all here for a reason and the area's variety of activities make it a great place to live. Oh, and by the way, this heat will let up in a month or so, so hang in there new group members.

Thanks to everyone that showed up last week and keep coming out.

Call for Volunteers !!

Call for Volunteers !!

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS !!

With the expansion to a south location and a long running veteran leadership performing at maximum level,

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS !!

This is Chris Ridder, I am running the social media, website, twitter, linkedin, etc accounts/communication from PORTLAND, OR area.  Yes, PORTLAND, OR !  I will not give up on COTN.  The leadership is awesome.

It really isn't that hard to volunteer.  Simple, once you think about it.  Help run the store at halftime, become a member of leadership core, help run the signup table, help run the squares, help with raffle, help play some music, merchandise runs from the great state, coordinate, communication, collaboration, promote, pay dues, etc.

The leadership was hard at work this summer finding a suitable watch site and we think we found a good partnership with third base.

I remember my first watch party in round rock years ago after moving to Austin area ('95 i think).  Typical Nebraska hospitality running wild, no Runzas or Godfathers, but really beyond awesome!

So next time you attend the watch party, stop, look around, who needs help, volunteer!

Thanks,

GO BIG RED
